10 Best Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Beauty Brands and Products to Consider in 2022

With the beauty industry being one of the biggest contributors to climate change, it’s time we took a serious look at sustainable and eco-friendly beauty product and brand alternatives.

Skincare is the most profitable industry with an annual turnover of £2.8bn, while the global beauty industry is estimated at $603bn (£446bn ).

It’s no surprise, then, that with all the packaging that accompanies every purchase we make, our beauty and skincare regimens are massive contributors to climate change.

Luckily, many beauty and skincare brands are now using eco-friendly and sustainable products and packaging – all we need to do is make this change.

But for us to make this significant change, we need to understand exactly what eco-friendly and sustainable is, and also what to look for when we buy.

What does eco-responsible and sustainable mean?

Sustainable: Can be maintained – Many brands are now using packaging alternatives that can be reused, meaning there’s less reason to throw it away so often.

Nature-friendly: Eenvironmentally friendly or not harmful to the environment – eg. products that end up in the ocean, like plastic, which, unbeknownst to us, ends up in many household products like face wipes. Also products that contain dangerous chemicals like sprays and detergents.

Do green products contain chemicals?

Eco-friendly products still contain chemicals, but are less likely to include environmentally harmful products.

What ingredients to avoid when buying beauty products?

If you’ve decided to make this switch, there are some ingredients that eco-friendly brands won’t include in their products, such as:

Parabens: Preservatives that extend the shelf life of a product. They are also known to disrupt hormone function, by activating the hormone estrogen, high levels of which have been found in breast cancer tumors.

Products that contain parabens include: shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, facial moisturizers, body lotions, foundations, mascaras and toners.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): SLS provides products with lots of bubbles and helps keep things perfectly clean. But long-term use can dry out skin, irritate eyes, inflame eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions, and leave skin “stripped” of moisture.

Products containing SLS: Liquid soap, shampoos, laundry detergents, dish detergents, toothpaste, bath bombs.

Phthalates: Phthalates help products retain their color and fragrance and are frequently used in cosmetics and to soften polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. It is also used as a solvent in cosmetics and other consumer products.

Products containing phthalates: plastic bottles, cosmetics, nail polish, shampoo, hair gel, shower gel and more.

Formaldehyde: Helps keep produce fresh and free of contaminants. Also called DMDM hydantoin in beauty products. At low levels, breathing in formaldehyde can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation. At higher levels, exposure to formaldehyde can cause skin rashes, shortness of breath, wheezing, and changes in lung function.

Products containing formaldehyde: nail polish, nail polish remover, straighteners, shampoo and conditioner, liquid soap, moisturizer, toothpaste, etc.

What should you pay attention to on the packaging?

Biodegradable: Able to be decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms and thus avoid pollution.

Reuse: Designed to be durable and used multiple times.

To recycle: Packaging made of materials that can be reused. Recyclable materials include glass, metal, cardboard, paper and some plastics.
