From selling perfumes in a Pakistani man’s boutique to becoming a quick bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore

Harshal Patel has become one of the most reliable fast bowlers in the IPL, with the player scalping wickets at regular intervals. Patel has recently made headlines due to his altercations with Riyan Parag. Few people know that today’s fast bowler once sold perfumes for a Pakistani for $35 a day.

Speaking on Breakfast with Champions, a show hosted by Gaurav Kapoor, Patel recalled how difficult it was for his grandmother to raise seven children on almost zero income. The Royal Challengers Bangalore fast bowler said his father’s generation had a slightly better life. However, according to Harshal, his father could barely put food on the table despite working six and a half days a week.

“We never had an abundance of it, but we had just enough. The family’s guiding principle was “if you do the right thing for the first 30 years of your life, you don’t have to worry about the rest”. I took this philosophy too seriously because I saw my father working six and a half days a week, every day. Hot, cold, rain, whatever. Harshal said.

In relation to the difficulties faced by his family, Harshal said he was now in a position where he could take a day off without worrying about its impact on his livelihood.

Harshal said his family moved to the United States just before the financial crisis hit the world in 2008.

Recalling his time selling perfumes for a Pakistani boutique in the United States, Patel said: “Once in the United States, I had to work (to survive). I started working in a Pakistani-owned perfumery in Elizabeth, New Jersey. I had studied in a Gujarati middle school so I couldn’t speak English at all. It was my first encounter with the English language and a version with so much slang. Because they had a predominantly Latin American population. So I learned their English gangster.

Harshal, who recently lost his sister, was embroiled in a violent altercation with Riyan Parag after being hit for two sixes and a four in the Rajasthan Royals final round.

Harshal also thanked Zaheer Khan for guiding him as a fast bowler in his debut. Harshal said his father retired immediately after receiving his US passport.
