Shock as another store closes on Fargate in Sheffield – and it could soon be half empty

Only 23 of the 40 units in the pedestrian zone remain occupied, or 57.5%. The list includes four banks, four mobile phone shops and a vape shop.

It is significantly higher than the number of vacant units in August 2020, after the first lockdown, when there were 10 empty units, or around 25%.

Sheffield City Council is spending millions to buy buildings and fund renovations to repurpose unused space as offices, in a bid to inject people into the city centre. But there is no guarantee that other closures will not follow.
