CLERMONT-FERRAND, France & LYON, France–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Regulatory news:
AFYREN (Paris:ALAFY), a green technology company that manufactures bio-based ingredients using fermentation technology and a circular business model, has unveiled its plan to commercialize high-quality solutions that will help customers in the industries it serves to achieve their sustainable development goals.
AFYREN manufactures bio-based carboxylic acids (C2-C6) needed by a wide variety of industries for their antibacterial, olfactory or preservative properties. Until now, these generic molecules were largely made from petroleum derivatives, contributing to an extractive activity that is no longer sustainable. The focus has always been on profitability and utility – environmental impact has been mostly ignored as a key performance indicator. But today, investors, OEMs and end users are looking at all products and services to find out if companies are doing their best to reduce their impact on the environment. In a context where the global production of biobased products is limited, the AFYREN offer will create opportunities for customers to access these acids locally in Europe.
- Meeting the sustainability challenge
Low-carbon chemicals will have a clear advantage as industries shift to renewable sources, a recent report Noted. Just as specialty chemical makers have an advantage over commodity chemical makers, “the next ten years could see a separation between the portfolios of green leaders and green laggards.”
AFYREN takes up the challenge by deploying differentiated and high-quality solutions that will help its customers achieve their sustainable development objectives with high-performance and competitive chemical bricks. From the end of May, AFYREN will deploy different solutions for these four major industrial categories: food and feed, flavors and fragrances, lubricants, life sciences and materials science.
AFYREN uses agricultural by-products instead of petroleum-based raw materials in a bio-based circular process that reduces the carbon footprint of these acids by 81%. The objective is to provide high-performance biosourced solutions to its industrial customers who wish to offer more natural and more environmentally friendly products to their end users.
“We launched AFYREN in 2012, focusing at every stage on sustainability and circularity“, said Nicolas Sordet, CEO of AFYREN. “It’s not just about replacing gasoline. Our process is biomimetic, low in pollution and low in energy. He uses local agricultural by-products and what’s left goes back into the soil as organic fertilizer. Our clients benefit from this dedication, this depth of action.”
- An opportunity to gain visibility and facilitate access to biosourced solutions
“What differentiates our offers are the raw materials used and their method of productionsaid AFYREN Commercial Director Joachim Merziger. “It gives our final products a unique value because they have equal or better technical performance, combined with an exceptional environmental performance, compared to existing petro-based equivalents on the market. Our solutions will help stakeholders along the value chain, from suppliers to end consumers, to understand that a production process with low environmental impact brings more value to the product.”
The product brands that AFYREN will showcase in the coming weeks will emphasize the bio-based nature of its offerings with the aim of educating markets that lack information and labeling on bio-based components and processes.
All of the solutions that AFYREN will deploy in the coming weeks will allow its customers to market biosourced products with high environmental and societal added value. The specific needs of different markets vary, so AFYREN branded products will reflect those market needs.
- Bio-based solutions offering distinct benefits for each target market
Food and animal feed: For this sector, AFYREN’s biosourced acids have replaced ingredients of fossil origin with natural ingredients of the same quality. They have properties that inhibit molds and microbes for food ingredients. AFYREN acids are building blocks for producing derivatives for animal feed additives such as salts, coated salts and glycerol esters, which are powerful gut health promoters for many species.
Flavors and fragrances: AFYREN launches high quality natural (NATURAL EU 1334/2008) and non-GMO acids that can be used as ingredients in formulations and derivatives in the flavor and fragrance industry, where customers are increasingly looking to favor “naturalness, sustainability and well-being.” They have a high level of purity and a consistent organoleptic profile.
Lubricants: AFYREN provides this sector with unique, high-quality bio-based organic acids: building blocks for high-performance lubricants and functional fluids. Many companies in this sector are facing particularly strong pressure to reduce the carbon footprint of their products as their customers adapt to electrification, the rise of wind power and other tectonic changes. . AFYREN’s low-carbon solutions are designed to help these companies achieve their environmental impact goals as part of this transition.
Life sciences and materials sciences: Afyren offers a wide range of solutions to increase the durability of coatings and polymers, or esters. For example, replacing fossil-derived ingredients in surfactants for hair conditioning without compromising formulation quality, or providing bio-based precursors for active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Created in 2012 to meet the growing need of manufacturers to reduce the use of petroleum derivatives in their production chain, AFYREN produces biomolecules from the reuse of non-food biomass. These ingredients are widely used in human and animal nutrition, flavors and fragrances, cosmetics and fine chemicals. This production of renewable carbon, rooted in the circular economy, uses fermentation technologies resulting from 10 years of research and patented worldwide. AFYREN is the winner of the 2030 World Innovation Competition in the “Plant proteins and plant chemistry” category and was selected for the French Tech 120 in 2020 and 2021. In 2018, AFYREN committed to its industrial project by creating the AFYREN NEOXY joint venture with Fonds SPI de Bpifrance. The AFYREN NEOXY plant under construction in the Grand Est region will produce AFYREN organic acids in 2022. AFYREN and AFYREN NEOXY employed more than 70 people at their sites in Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand and Carling Saint-Avold. In 2021, AFYREN listed on Euronext Growth® in Paris, raising a total amount of €70.4 million with the objective of accelerating its industrial development (Afyren’s ISIN: FR0014005AC9, ticker: ALAFY).
