What pet-friendly cleaning products should I use?

April showers bring Mayflowers…but they also bring falling hair, muddy paws and the nasty smells of your furry friends as we all start to enjoy the warmer weather. From their food dishes to sleeping areas, life for pets can get a little messy at times, but cleaning up doesn’t have to get in the way of daily cuddles. So what’s the secret to dealing with all that animal messes effectively and efficiently? It’s about choosing the right products for your home, your pet, and your lifestyle. To get your pet’s spring cleaning off to a great start, we asked Calgary-based cleaning expert Sarah McAllister of Go Clean Go to share her top tips and tricks for pet owners on how to keep their home cool and fresh throughout the season.

What’s the best way to get rid of deeply embedded pet hair in clothes, fabrics and furniture?

“Dogs’ and cats’ coats change with the seasons, and spring is when they blow their winter coat. A must-have cleaning product for pet owners is Bounce Pet Dryer Sheets, fingers in the nose. They look like regular dryer sheets, but they’re made for pet owners. They’re twice the size of most dryer sheets and work to reduce wrinkles, static and add softness, while repelling pet hair and lint from your clothes so you can get hugs from your pet without wearing them to the office.

What’s your best tip for getting rid of old pet stains?

“It’s always best to clean up pet accidents properly as soon as they happen. Pets can smell these odors and since pets like to mark their territory, they will continue to have accidents in the same spot until you take care of the smell entirely. In terms of the best products to use for cleaning, it depends on the surface. For pet damage on hard surfaces, I use Mr. Clean Multi-Surface Liquid Cleaner. For fabrics that you can throw in the wash, use an enzymatic cleaner like tidal powder to help eliminate odors and break down the stain. And finally, for carpets, try a steam cleaner to deep clean the fibers at the base of the fabric.
